I can’t believe we are already a month into 2004. In fact, I’m not entirely sure
where 2003 went!
Certainly lots of changes in 2003, and change can often lead to uncertainty.
I’ve sensed from the private inquiries I’ve gotten that there is a bit of worry
that Brad leaving the LEGO Company is going to adversely effect the community
efforts he has supported and grown internally.
Let me cut right to the point and assure you that community support will not
stop. In recent months, the concepts of community have received unprecedented
support from colleagues. I am getting more and more requests from colleagues to
meet and talk about possible community support ideas.
Brad and LEGO Direct have achieved amazing results in a very short period of
time. Without Brad’s vision and leadership, none of this could have happened. I
for one am very thankful for that vision, and am working hard to continue it
well into the future. As you may know, I will be stepping into Brad’s shoes at
the BF PDX Q&A. During this session, I will share many more details about the
LEGO Community Development Team, our vision for the future, our internal and
external successes in 2003, and much more. And of course, there will be
questions and answers!
In the meantime, please rest easy knowing that interaction between the community
and the LEGO Company is going to continue to get closer and closer. There are
some terrific things in the pipeline this year!

Not sure I qualify for "hard working" (possibly hardLY working), but as of right
now, we don't have plans to stream a webcast from the live events. This is due
mainly to limited equipment and the fact that we don't have some of the
expertise that was available at DC shows.
However, it looks like Larry is planning on demonstrating his flying fingers
technique for keynote and QA speeches, and I will be taking pictures and posting
them on the website throughout the event.
Of course, if anybody in the Portland area is interested in volunteering to
spearhead a webcast, I'm all ears...

And also due to the fact that we don't have wired, high speed, network access.
Streaming video or audio tends to be quite bandwidth intensive, as I understand
it.

I’m not sure a webcast is in the cards. I don’t think we have the bandwidth for
one. However I am going to try mightily to capture the talk in real time as I
usually do, and further, I am going to try to have chat sessions open to get
incoming questions in as many different venues as possible.
Here’s the list of what I am thinking of (in the case of fan sites, only if the
owners don’t have a problem with it)

I'd be happy with streaming video online somewhere - it doesn't need to be
live - and we don't need a streaming video server to do it.
If someone can record the event on video (MiniDV), I would be happy to pull
the content from the tape and compress it nicely for distribution on an
available web server.
It is important though that the speaker wear a microphone - and when
questions are asked, it's best if the speaker repeats the question for the
mic before answering it.
Most stores that rent video equipment should be able to provide a good
wireless mic that could be used for this - and I'm sure someone out there
has a decent MiniDV compatible camcorder.
Let's not box ourselves in here by thinking it has to be expensive or
complex by way of broadband or fancy equipment.

Like the return of gray, maybe? Sorry to bring it up again. Couldn’t hurt to rub
it in unless really everybody at LEGO HQ in Billund turns green every time the
issue comes up.
When I hear those “community developement”-stuff now, I can’t help but think how
LEGO alienated right those community members in the first place by secretly
messing with color standards and taking everybody for a fool with their pathetic
attempts at explanation. Currently I wouldn’t trust anything coming from the
direction of The LEGO Group any farther than I could throw say a Microsoft
Windows®-PC.
Again, sorry for being so negative, but since past december I am NOT looking
forward to the LEGO-year of 2004.

The color change: Why? Who got canned for making such a stupid decision? When
will it be corrected?
