Hi,
someone else experiencing the following:
* No authentication mails form Lugnet when posting through the web interface
when not logged in
* No posts when posting through the newsreader
* The only way to post is through the web interface with login
I already pinged the Admins but haven't got reply so far.

Possibly related, I don't know
I normally post logged onto the site so haven't had authentication email
problems, but I haven't received the news by mail I normally get (digest for CAD
and every post for trains). This could be a Hotmail problem or a Lugnet problem.

I'm getting this too---that is, my newsreader thinks that it's posting, but
since I never get the authentication e-mail my posts never go up.
Moreover, when I go to the multiple post authentication page
http://news.lugnet.com/news/multiauth.cgi
it lets me submit my address (which I believe means that I do have pending
posts) but I have yet to get the e-mail with the link that will let me actually
authenticate my posts.

It's definitely a Lugnet problem. I haven't received any news-by-mail posts
either recently. The last one I got was on Halloween. I hope this gets fixed
very soon! Rene, where are you?

Hi Willy,
I am so sorry - apparently we had a severe problem in the mail system that went
unnoticed (I really was knee-deep in a number of issues and did not suspect
anything to be wrong, let alone the warning system to actually misinterpret the
status of the mail system).
Anyway, the server is currently digging through the backlog of initially some
16000 unprocessed mails (as I write this, it's down to 3000 already), with a lot
of spam apparently. Open articles should be receiving their authentication
replies today.
I am very sorry for all the inconveniences. I have identified what went wrong
and will take measures to avoid similar failure in the future.
Thanks for flagging this - otherwise I might not have noticed before the weekend
(when some routine checks were due anyway).

This is apparently still happening. I sent a post for authentication on
11/23/2007 10:19AM and the authentication message did not show up until
11/23/2007 3:12PM - can you tell us if this is going to be a recurring
issue, or are there some peak traffic times that are being experienced?

I think you have identified something that went wrong, there is more as yet
unidentified that needs to be fixed.

I'm flagging this because I know you'll discover what went wrong. Hopefully
you can stop it from happening again.
I sent you some private email on this subject, perhaps what I was
speculating about there did not really happen as I thought. If it is
incorrect please disregard it.

I think it makes sense to post a small update on this issue:
As a matter of fact, email is running fine since the discovery of the "hang"
some days ago. We have a comprehensive warning and traffic management mechanism
in place so we should not run into a similar backlog again.
However, we do experience delivery problems to some destinations, which we are
trying to resolve case by case. These delivery problems are basically of three
types:
- general network failure: Some networks, esp. in the US, seem to have had
connectivity issues. Since delivery is slowly coming back to normal in those
directions, I figure the tickets raised and general maintenance have fixed this
point.
- mail delivery failure: Some servers have - for a variety of reasons - refused
to accept mail vom LUGNET. The reasons ranged from configuration errors (on the
destination side) to rigorous spam policies. Most of these cases could be
resolved already, some remain open but will hopefully get fixed soon.
- service slow-down due to high server load: The LUGNET server runs through a
daily maintenance routine that involves a complete backup of all (several
hundred thousand) files. While the backup runs, mail delivery usually slows down
(as does NNTP). I am currently implementing a different backup mechanism that
will avoid these slow-downs almost completely. Stay tuned ;)

Related problem maybe (I haven’t been following this thread):
I’ve sent two messages today via NNTP and no authentication posts have shown up
as of yet. First message sent 2 hours ago. I am posting this message from the
web interface.
