You don't have to go to Europe.  Here's one in Tennessee:

I rode it this summer.  Pretty cool.  A bit thrilling at the top. :-)

This is a very preliminary design study of a funicular (proper name?).
It is a somewhat parallogram-ish single passenger car for going up a very • steep
and straight incline (mountain).

These ARE cool, aren't they

I'm pretty excited about it, mostly because my wife may get encouraged to • help
me with this project.  We rode a vehicle like this in Switzerland during our
honeymoon.

Where? There are (at least?) two in Zurich, both of which I rode.

The funicular we rode started in Vevey, and made stops in towns up to Mt.
Pelerin.  This is near Montreax on Lake Geneva.  We bought some nice wine at a
family owned winery when we stopped in Chardonne- chatted some with the owners
as we sampled their selection.

The vehicle we rode was pulled and lowered along the steep trac>k
via a cable system that rode along guide-pulleys in the center of the track.
My wife may help build the small mountain, if we have enough burps and bricks
to do it.

The model is quite blandly red.  No interesting features other than the • general
shape.

<snip some of my own ramblings>

There was a code pilot controlled rack railway with a carriage quite similar
in appearance to yours at the LLC grand opening legofest 20 march 1999. I
forget who brought it but it was cool and you ought to look at it if you can
(there are pictures somewhere).

I'd love to see this.

I found your car to be rather steep, slantwise. As I recall, Rigiblick was
that steep (although much smaller, it was all one level inside) and Polybahn
wasn't quite that steep with only 2 steps between each level.

Here is the only picture I can find so far on the web of the funicular
Vevey-Chardonne-Mt Pelerin:

http://www.waadtland.ch/gb/Themes_ways3.html

I'm not sure what slope this particular funicular has.

This funicular, which is NOT the Vevey route, does look a lot like what I
recall:

(I must qualify this link, as this website appears to be down for the moment,
and I can't verify that it is the funicular that I want to cite.  If you get
through, use the back button at the bottom of the page to see other funiculars
in Switzerland.)

later,
James Mathis

(...) And, if we're going to bring inclines into it, there's one in Pittsburgh: (URL) I think there's another one, too, but I actually rode the Duquesne (that doo-kane) Incline, so it's the one I remember. eric (24 years ago, 31-Aug-00, to lugnet.trains)
