That layout you posted was interesting from a thought experiment perspective,
but not practical from a build perspective. IMHO as an ex model railroader
where this topic comes up a lot.

It would work fine...on the floor.  This is where my layouts are for the most
part, with the lego trains it works quite well to have them directly onto a
solid floor.  Yes, it does limit some choices of elevation, but it also adds a
lot to the choices that are availabe for access...you can walk across the town
to get to the derailment :).

Poor planning never stopped me...the last layout in the apartment had a large
section of inacessable area, including the station.  Access was by removing one
of the two ramps, and then crawling in underneath the 3' high table-I don't
think I will do that again.

When I buy a basement with rain deflector (house) I hope to go around the walls
of the basement at around the 3' level, with 2' wide shelves.  The floor in the
middle will become the major town area, and the elevated areas will have the
majority of the shunting to be done on them...I cannot wait to have a MR
meeting with Lego trains as the focus :).  (one of the clubs I belong to out in
BC has round robin meetings.)
