Lindsay, 1x2x2 windows do exist in black. But I can't say in what set. I purchased two of
these, as well as one 1x1x2 (thin tall) window in black in a German toy stores train parts
box back in the 80's. This wooden box with lots of partitions had loose train pieces as well
as train spare parts polybags. Many German (and other European?) toy stores have (or maybe I
should say HAD) loose train spare parts in a big box that was usually hidden underneath the
LEGO display. Whenever I visited a toy store in Germany, I would always ask if they had
loose "ersatzteile" (spare parts). (Note: most of the 180 white 2x2 cylinder bricks I have
came from train polybags in these boxes.) Now I'm not sure exactly what sets had black
windows, but wasn't it one of the 70's (or 80's?) train sets?
I too would buy lots of 2x2 gray windows (as well as all other colors).
Lindsay, you brought up a good point about the last known set that all the classic windows
came in.
I won't vouch that this is 100% accurate, but:
1x2x3 (classic door) - set 400 - 1976 (the year before the regular minifigs came out).
1x6x2 (3 pane window) - set 148 (train station) - 1975.
1x1x2 (tall thin window), 1x2x1 (short fat window), 1x1x1 (small window), 1x3x2 window and
1x4x2 window - these all were still produced in the windows parts packs as late as the
mid-to-late 1980's.
1x6x2 (shuttered window) & 1x6x3 (large picture window) - I'll check, but probably before
'76.
1x2x2 window - still in production. Over the years this has been produced in red, white,
yellow, blue, black & gray, with black and gray being the very rare colors.
