And that is despite the fact that all models in miniland have been given a healthy coat of UV protection. One of the model builders told me that the structures in miniland must be replaced every 5-7 years. Bill V. could comment more knowledeably here since he was, in fact, a MMB at LLC.

Well, the UV protective coating itself isn’t even as durable as would be desirable. When we were perusing Miniland at LLCA in February ‘05, there were large sections of it (and other non-related models throughout the park) where the UV protective glaze was bubbled, chipped, or peeling away in spots at least as large as the 1x4x3 panel. It looked bad. I was somewhat bummed to find out that Miniland received a major overhaul shortly after my one visit, and I’m not sure how long it will be before I can make a return trip. Hopefully by then the new stuff won’t have deteriorated to the same state. More hopefully, they’ll get that central US LEGOLAND location off the ground, and it’ll be something that I can more easily do as a short vacation (especially if some sort of major fest becomes associated with that area...).

Anyways, the big problem as I see it, is that all of the three European LEGOLAND parks are located in a more northerly climate, where snow is expected annually, and the sun isn’t nearly as harsh in the summer. LLCA is the one subtropical location, and being that it’s all uncovered outdoor displays, the sun just tears those models to heck. I’m sure the European parks don’t have to be nearly as rigorous about their renovation schedule, at least not specifically due to sun damage.
