On that note, is there a common term to refer to a train wheel without a flange?
Some terms I've considered include:

Blind Driver Wheel
Sans Flange Driver Wheel
Blank Driver Wheel
Unflanged Driver Wheel

Were any real trains ever made with wheels that didn't have flanges?  I've been
told it's done in the model train world often.  In either case, is there a
common term that people use for a wheel without a flange?

The normal one I have heard (& read) about them being called is blind drivers.

Certanly more than just the 9F Starship had blind drivers- at least one british
0-4-4 had a blind trailing axle too...figure that one out.  CPR 2-8-0's that
were conversions of 0-8-0's do too- the one in Sandon, BC, has a blind axle.
Our 0-8-0 in 3.5" has a blind driver, but it didn't start life that way.  It
turns out that derailing @ speed tends to break cast iron wheels...and no, I
wasn't the responsible party.
