What kind of ruling are we waiting for? An acceptance into the Standards and
Recommended Practices, or a ruling that says L gage modelers can be legitimate
members of the NMRA?

They (NMRA) should NOT accept "L" gauge as it is, as at present it is a
propriatory system.  (Although, lego has not yet expressed a interest in
stopping us in the secondary market).  Does the NMRA have a listing for P4?
(not Proto:87)...it probably has less active modelers than Lego does...if it has
a listing for P4, then getting L gauge recognized should be easier.

A trivial question: why does the NMRA SRP spell "gauge" as "gage"?

Because either one is an acceptable spelling?  Kind of like waggon vice wagon.

gage is more common in industrial settings (that I can tell you, CGCM uses it
exclusively).
