<snipping most of the article, sorry allan>

I guess you are right in what you are saying about lego being a participating
hobby.  However.  I really don't think there is anything wrong >with "collecting Lego"

Neither do I.  I didn't suggest it was wrong, only that I was curious why
some folks like to keep sets unopened.  It's a really hard concept for me to
get my little brain around.  :)

I hear you say that and see that now. But when I read your original (requoting)

This may sound a bit snotty, so I apologize in advance.
But I honestly feel this way:

If you never open it, how can you have any fun with it?

I seriously took your words to mean "this is wrong". The "may sound a bit
snotty" is often a giveaway to that sort of "wrongness" sentiment.

Different interpretations of what it means to 'be snotty' I guess. I see
snotty as taunting, presumptuous, know-it-all.  I was trying to preface my
comments (which *could* have sounded snotty) and let people know that I
wasn't just flinging out words, but that these were my real feelings.

If I inherently knew something was wrong, I would hope I would have the good
sense not to post it.  :)

The phrase:

If you never open it, how can you have any fun with it?

Could *perhaps* be interpreted in a manner similar to comments like, "Now
what are you going to do smarty pants?"

I wasn't trying to indicate I was feeling 'wrong' only that I was really
curious how someone can enjoy a LEGO set without opening it.  I can't, so I
wondered how others can.

Had you said

"I know others feel differently and I'm OK with people enjoying their hobby
as they wish, but I honestly would like to know why they like MISB sets,
because I don't get the attraction myself"

you may have gotten rather different responses.

Not that this is any big festouche
                          ^^^^^^^^^

Not in my dictionary, can you elaborate?

, mind you... But still, we almost got off
to a full blown war over nothing because of careless wording.

We did?  Where did that happen?  I saw it as a simple misunderstanding which
I quickly cleared up.  I didn't see anything more than that, honestly.

I know you said you didn't like the numbering aspect. And if LEGO(r) had
said, "10K and that is ALL" I'd be in your camp. But if you don't like
numbers, just wait. Meanwhile we will have our fun.

Absolutely.  I'm not trying to spoil anyone's fun.  But since the issues of
numbers on the locomotives and their apparently brisk sales have both come
up several times, I thought it was an interesting question to ask.  "What
fun do you get out of not opening these sets."  Looks like several people
find great delight in it.  Though I still can't fathom why.  :)

All the best,
Allan B.
