After four sittings I have almost finished my GP30. I am happy with the model;

Thanks! This is nice work. As others have said, the rounded cab top is so
GP30 characteristic... between that and the humped ventilator you've nailed
the look of the engine. Very good use of SNOT and halfstud offset techniques
in this model.

Still don't think anyone has solved the railing delicacy issue yet but
that's a nice try... better than many. I am just tempted to leave side
railings off completely, they can't be done suitably lacily.

Lar,

Thanks. I don't know if you remember, but I have been mulling over the idea of
doing a GP30 since you suggested it some time ago. (Back when I made my 6 wide SD40-2.)
At the time, we had the same discussion about railings too. That was back when
I used technic axles to do railings. Whoa those were thick! Too thick. The
railings that I think come closest to the right look are the pirate hook tubing
railings, or the copper wire inside the tubing railings. Sorry I cannot remember
whom I should credit for those techniques. I think my railings are OK, and I use
them because I think my engines look worse without the railings. (potato potato)[1]
I have also wondered if LEGO came up with a railing solution, would people buy
a railing parts pack? If it was good enough, I would.

Chris

1. You know... potato potato, tomato tomato...

(...) Dan Siskind of the GMLTC came up with the idea of using the pirate's hook. Although there aren't any pics on the net that I'm aware exemplifying Dan's technique, he first used it IIRC on a UP Dash 9 (8 wide:-) that sits in Conan's basement. (...) (23 years ago, 10-Sep-01, to lugnet.trains)
