Actually my dream is if you could buy LEGO pieces by weight, just
scoop them up in a bag and then pay per kilo. Just like in candy
stores.

Imagine hand picking beams, gears, 1x2 liftarms and joints all in a
bag and only pay for the parts you actually want/need...

I've already done this. A guy called Jon Hayward sells bricks by weight at
UK Legofest's. He sets up loads of boxe's on tables and you just rifle
through them. You put your selected parts in a freezer bag.

You can get all sorts of great parts. I once cleaned him out of
differential's by buying all five, by weight! not individually.

We have a bulk vendor in our local group as well.  We call him "Uncle
Dan".  He buys massive amounts of LEGO from all over, but he doesn't
play with 'em.  He sells speciality parts like Technic separately but
regular LEGO gets dumped out on the floor during our meetings and
people crawl around picking out what they want.  What is left over
goes on eBay or to a flea market for sale to the public.

I understand you can usually buy LEGO in bulk at the LEGOLAND parks.
I think it's at the Lego Clubhouse.  But the selection is somewhat
limited.

I wish that LEGO would sell K-8's to the general public.  (A K-8, for
those who don't know, is a large box of randomly assorted LEGO parts,
which LEGO uses at promotional events for kids to play with.  At
BrickFest and BricksWest, there is usually one or two of these for us
to dig through - but the boxes need to be as full when LEGO gets them
back as they were to start with, so you have to put in an amount equal
to what you take out.

The stuff in K-8's is often weird stuff that has never appeared in
sets - leftovers from the LEGOLAND parks' model shops, I think.  The
parts are all picked over, some new and some very used.  It's a
complete "grab bag" of LEGO....

This doesn't really belong in lugnet.technic, but I'm not sure where
to put followups so I'll leave it here.  If you reply, please set
followups appropriately.
