I think a sub group for 'modifiers' is a good idea. I haven't cut up any
pieces myself, broken loads, but never sawn any up. What I will admit to is
strenghtening parts, particulary universal joints. I bind the ends with
sellotape as the axle's tend to break the universal's. This is a great way
of repairing broken universals when the axle has split the end open. I've
used this method on other similair parts as well. This isn't like making a
new part just correcting difficancies in the original part. These
difficancies are probably only their due to materials avaiable to lego and
having to make a part small enough to clear other parts, bulky parts help no
one.

If anyone remembers the very first universal joints were the same diameter
all the way along, they didn't have the narrower section with the slots that
looks like a bush, I still have two of these but I've never thought to
substitute them into MOCs for greater strength (plus they are red, which
isn't ideal)

It comes down to personal choice in the end. I haven't had to resort to
these measures myself but I can see how somtimes it would be the only way to
get something to work.

I started this partly due to my problems with leaf springs, I was sure I had
some spring steel knocking around somewhere but I can't find it.  I'll let
everyone know when I've made them.

One more thing. I'd like to see a universal which takes up far less room.
one with a 2L axle rather than a socket. in fact axles of various length
with a univesal at the end would be great.

Oh fantastic stuff, that would be excellent as it would allow steered driven
axles without using the 8880 system.  One and two length stub axles would be
perfect.  And with the u/j pivoting an even number of studs from the end
unlike the current u/j where the bend is in the centre of a five wide element.

(...) I'm not aware of that piece, and I couldn't find it on Technica. It has to be from before 1980 since I have the <set:8860> and it has the regular ujoints. Is there a place with a photo of this piece? In what sets did it appear? Thanks, David (23 years ago, 18-Apr-01, to lugnet.robotics, lugnet.technic)
