Or for that matter, why not have the axle hole of the
gear be the same shape and size as an 8t gear? This
would be similar to how the center of the large
turntable accepts a 24t gear. Use a bushing if you
want it to spin independently of the axle, use a gear
if you want it connected to the axle.
But there are four other pieces I'd dearly love to
see:
- A 2-unit half beam in which both holes are cross
holes. This would be like the current 3-unit half beam
with the center unit (the one with the round hole)
removed. In other words, make this: (+O+) into this:
(++). This is for all those cases where you need to
lock an axle in place on a beam that only has round
holes.
- A 2-unit crossblock in which both holes are cross
holes. This is the ubiquitous piece that links two
axles perpendicular to each other, but altered so that
neither axle can turn.
- A 3-unit crossblock with two full-size pegs instead
of the funky tabs that are there now. I'm talking
about the piece that is often used as a steering
arm--its tabs fit into the black two-pegged steering
bearing. I don't like the two-pegged steering bearing
because the fit of those tabs into the bearing doesn't
bear much weight well. But there's no compact way to
reproduce that piece's function. The tech play models
have a steering arm with half-pegs above and below,
but this part is 1.2 units tall--no good for anything
except a "brick-centric" structure.
- A planetary gear (a ring with teeth on the inside).
The inside of the large turntable is the only thing
that comes close. Perhaps the outside of the ring
would have brackets that accept pegs parallel with the
axis of rotation.
Of course, I could probably think of more if
pressed... :)

| (...) Why not just have toothed holes on all gears? Using a toothed half bushing, it's easy enough to convert a gear with toothed hole to a axle hole gear...It might be cool to inset the hole so that the hole would be as wide as a half beam, thus (...)
