I've been thinking about this for about a week and can't come up with

I even looked at the 8880 instructions but I couldn't figure out how to make
the conversion. Does anyone have any ideas?

The powerdrive on the 8448 has an outer universal joint on each rear wheel,
to facilitate the suspension.  Would it be possible to leverage[2] these
u-joints to allow rear-wheel steering?

The problem with using u-joints is that as the angle increases, the output
becomes more "jumpy" relative to the input. This is why real cars (and the
8880) use CV joints. With suspension, it's OK, because you can use two u-joints
to cancel each other out (assuming you stick with "parallelogram" suspension).
Maybe there's a way to integrate the 8880 CV joints into the 8448, but this
would increase friction (see http://news.lugnet.com/technic/?n=3612 and
http://news.lugnet.com/technic/?n=1604), and you probably wouldn't be able to
effectively motorise it.

Similar to what I'm building now I think. I'm using 2 u-joints with 'parallelogram' suspension, and it works ok as long as you make sure that the pivot points for the hub and suspension are vertically aligned witht he u-joint pivot points. That way, (...) (23 years ago, 18-Jan-01, to lugnet.technic)

(...) Hmm. I'm not a Technic-head, and I haven't actually sat down and played with the ABS to know how well this would work, but here goes an idea... In order to look right (and work well, I think), the pivot for the rear wheels need to be as close (...) (23 years ago, 10-Jan-01, to lugnet.technic)
