Mike --

I was going to put you up a bunch of links to compressors, but I see that Ian Sinclair has
already taken care of that.  I have also heard of people using compressed air cans (you
know, the ones for blowing the fluff off computers, photo negatives, etc.) to power Lego
pneumatics, but I've never done it myself.  Maximum practical pressure in a pneumatic Lego
system is about 40 p.s.i., according to my tire gauge.

I use the small pneumatic pumps powered by the old-style 9V motors, and the large ones
powered by the newer 9V gear motor, depending on the application -- both are Lego
products.  So far as I know, only the large pump is sold with the current round of Lego
sets (Search Sub, Tow Truck, etc.).  The small pumps are a special spare parts order,
either from Lego Service or from Lego DACTA.  If you want to reciprocate the large pumps,
it's best to remove the return spring  -- I haven't found a way to do this reversibly so
once the spring is off, it's off for good and then it's NSG as a manual pump (if you ever
feel like you need to do that).

On the pressure pulses: it probably depends on your application, but I haven't seen much
in the way of pulses -- if it's there, the friction on the large cylinders damps it pretty
well.

Cheers

JP

P.S.  Sorry for double posting my previous message (itchy mouse finger).

Jonathan (...) Sounds OK to me, what are you using to pump air directly into the pneumatic cylinders? Have you got some sort of electric pump (maybe a homegrown Lego one), a bicycle pump ...?? I quite like the idea of a Lego pump powered with some (...) (25 years ago, 4-Nov-99, to lugnet.technic)
