I keep my plates of 4x4 und larger in rings. That is, I connect them on
one corner or one edge, creating an object. When working, I then have,
for example, a ring of 4x6 gray plates from which I peel off plates as
needed. Rings can be stacked or placed together into bins. I learned
this from Todd, but have since seen LEGO Model Builders do the same.
I store large bricks as 1xn's of a color in their own bucket, and 2xn's
of that color in another bucket, etc. The 1x1 bricks are stored as
"sticks" to make them easier to locate.

I do something similar with tiny elements. Just as you're creating
contrast of size with the two elements you're choosing to put together,
I often put black with white, blue with yellow, etc. to save on the
number of bins used. Your smaller elements may fall to the bottom.
