I've been depriving myself of all LEGO construction the past month in
order to finally sort all of my pieces.  Using Akro-Mils units, I've
just about completed my first run through the sorting process.  My
question relates to the sorting of bricks, plates, and slopes.

Up till now, I've simply been tossing bricks and the larger plates and
slopes into large rubbermaid bins, knowing full well that I won't be
able to fit them into any drawers.  What sort of a system do people tend
to use for these high-quantity, high-volume pieces?

I was considering buying a bunch of the rubbermaid three-drawer units.
My thought was that I could put logical pairs of pieces together - 1x6
and 1x1 in one drawer, 1x2 and 1x8 in another, 1x3 and 1x10 in a third,
etc. With a system like this, I imagine it might be pretty easy to pick
out the part you wanted - first because the eye sorts by color quite
naturally, and secondly because the mixing of two widely disparate
shapes might be easily distinguishable.  My thought was that this might
necessitate fewer drawers total.  Has anybody ever tried something like
this, and have they had any luck with it?

Otherwise, how do you sort your high-quantity high-volume pieces?

Shaun, I use the Akron Mills bins for small pieces as you do. I have also
used the LEGO buckets (old style work much better than new "anti-helmet"
style) as mentioned. However, many years ago, I happened upon some kitchen
trash cans (30 qt) that came in green, red, blue, white and black.
(Unfortunately, not in yellow, so I use the green for my yellow bricks.)
They were made by Frem. I keep my 2x4 bricks in these. I have also picked up
colored bins that are 12" x 12" x 8" from a place called "Storables". I keep
my 2x3, 2x2, 1x2, 1x4 and 1x6 bricks in these. You can see this arrangement
in the following pic:

you can see that I also use "copy paper boxes" These are about 12" x 18" x
12". I would start with these if your collection is still reasonable (mine
no longer is ;-). I also use cardboard bin boxes (seen in the upper area of
the second pic) in sizes from 2" x 12" x 4" up to 12" x 18" x 4" which I
have picked up over the years. I know that these are available through
industrial suppliers. None of these bins have been "cheap", but they are
definitely worth the price.

One more bit of advice: move slowly when buying storage containers. I have
around 600 bins, and there are some I don't like (or use) as much as others.
When looking into bin purchases, look for longevity in the company for your
future expansion needs.

Thanks to Mark Sandlin (Admiral Muffin Head) for posting these pics.
