Our 2nd match was Saturday at 1:00.

An additional tidbit was that Jason had a very strong desire to swoosh a
completed ISD, which is what we did with ISD #2. He & I took it out and around
the LEGO booth on its brief maiden flight (even people at a Star Wars
convention get out of your way when youre running around with a 3 foot long,
pointy LEGO model held over your head). Afterword the ISD suffered a, um, hard
landing from about 4 feet above the table - its amazing how well such a model
splashes ;-).
|
The final Jedi vs. Sith match took place that same day
at 4:00. We managed to once again win and shorten our
building time.
|
For those of you counting, that was three ISD builds in under 24 hours, with the
last two builds seperated by about an hour. To say we were running on adreneline
might be an understatement.
|
(I think Brian Davis is the one missing from the team
picture.)
|
Correct. But my son Ben is in it, so Im OK with that :-).
|
After our victory LEGO awarded us a Darth Vader model
and gave each of us a Darth Vader medallion.
|
The medallions were even awarded by a Princess Leia look-alike, which I gotta
admit was kinda fun. And my son loved it! The Darth Vader model was a fantastic,
articulated work of art as well from a master builder. Amazing work!
|
Im very proud of our team for working well together
and giving it their all.
|
Ill publicly say that as well. I had a tremendous time, to a large part due to
the people on the team. Oh, well, you know, that and winning.
|
We were especially pleased to emerge victorious with
2 youngsters on our team. (The other teams were all
adults, if I remember right.)
|
I think I recall that some of the teams we did not see had kids listed as well,
but ours were exceptional. Meyer (age 6) built all 32 greeble strips for around
the edge of the model, and then went on to help with other greeblage, while Ben
(age 7) built the raised bridge support structure pretty much solo while I
tried desperately to keep him supplied with parts and greeble strips. Both these
kids did an amazing job in a noisy, intensive enviroment with a huge complex
model (OK, as a parent Im biased). Given that the entire build had to take
place on a 4x8 foot table, the fact that I could work over the heads of two
youthful builders may have worked to our advantage.
|
I would also like to thank the LEGO company for
holding this event and awarding us prizes, especially
to Melinda Carter who coordinated the whole thing.
|
Seconded. The staff at the LEGO booth were amazing folks, running a lot of
things in a very small footprint while always being friendly and helpful. Thank
You!
|
There are some other interesting things to see, like
a huge Republic ship from Episode III
|
Truly amazing, about 150 lbs and around 6 feet long, with fully movable deck
guns (and yes you could just walk up and move them - fantastic!), and a
traveling docking gantry in the keel docking bay. The longer you looked, the
more you saw. Kudos to LEGO and the master builder (Eric, whose last name
escapes me at the moment).
