Because the UCS sets are hugely expensive, and TLC seems to be leaning
more towards iconic symbols of Star Wars for the UCS line. The TIE Fighter
would have made more sense than the TIE Interceptor as far as being an
iconic symbol, but the Interceptor is still instantly recognizable as a TIE
and has a sleeker more appealling look to it. The RBR probably isn't even
the sixth ship that comes to anyone's mind when you mention the words "star
wars", but it is instantly recognizable because of how well people remember
the opening scenes of ANH. The Radiant VII is a bit too similar to the RBR
(and if they don't do any more of the TIEs because they already did one,
they won't do the Radiant VII either for the same reason), it's from one of
the prequels, which appeal mostly to the hard-core SW fan-base, but not
nearly as much to the general public as the original trilogy did, and there
are still a lot of considerably better-known ships left to choose from. I'm
not saying it won't ever get produced in UCS form, but I'd probably die from
shock if it got produced before 2010.
Another thing to remember is that they don't have to stick to ships for
the UCS line. They've done a Darth Maul bust, and full-figure Yoda (also
R2, for those lucky few winners), but they haven't done Vader, any of the
Imperial troopers, or C-3PO (that one might be a problem with gold-chrome
bricks), and they haven't released a retail version of R2 like they did with
Yoda. If it gets to the point where they're releasing the Radiant VII, I'd
also expect to see at least two more UCS characters released first.
