Seems that I got lucky then:

I got the RBR at Target, price matched to K-Mart. Target did not want
to do it, but then did it anyway. This was on a Sunday evening, with a
large line behind me. Don't know if that helped any.
The Yodas and Gunships came from TRU, also price matched to K-Mart.
TRU did not hesitate to do the price match.
All I can suggest is that you try at a different store, maybe at a
busy time. They may also feel different about it when you are already
at the register, rather than just asking at the service desk.
