A long time ago, I started building little robots that were roughly minifig
size.  I built this particular robot at least 6 years ago, and I've always
loved it.  I recently decided to ldraw it and test out a new idea for
"instructions".  Here is the result- a short animation that shows you how to
put it together one piece at a time while it spins in front of you.

Fisrtly, what a cool robot. The animated instruction is a good idea, but it
seemed to go a little fast on my machine to really see each step clear
enough to build it. A manual frame by frame advance works better.

Thanks!  It seems that everyone thought the framerate was too fast.  Having
it looping continuously should solve that- I'm not sure which players people
are using, but Windows Media Player lets you do that.  The whole thing is
pretty short such that if you miss a detail and can't see it that well in
the following frames, it only takes a few seconds to get back there.

Also, I was trying to hit a balance between instructions and a cool
animation, so that's the other reason for the speed.

What software did you use to create it? I'm aware that POVRay has an
animation feature but haven't explored it's uses yet. Is that what you used?

I used:
  MLCAD to build the model
L3P to create the initial POV-Ray file
  POV-Ray to animate and render
  VideoMach to assemble the clip

BTW, just today I've been looking at your classic space instructions on the
BI Instruction Portal. They capture the feel of CS nicely without actually
being CS. I might make up a few tonight.

Hey, thanks!  I've had those around for quite a while and just got around to
adding them to the Portal last week.  I'm glad you enjoyed them.
