Bingo! You got that one right. It might seen sacrilege to some, and most of my
friends would beat me with a wet noodle for saying it, but some of us
(including me) simply are not the huge Star Wars fans that everyone assumes us
to be. Just because I'm a pseudo-geek who includes role-playing, Lego, and
computers among his hobbies does not inherently mean that I want to go to
opening night of a Star Wars film or attend Star Trek conventions dressed as a
Klingon. The reason I enjoy playing (and yes I *play* with them, even at 29
years old) with Lego Space is because with most subthemes, especially Classic,
there is endless room for me to be creative. I can develop my own spacecraft,
lunar bases, asteroid mines, planetary colonies, etc. And better yet, even
using the original sets, I can create characters, storylines, and whole
fictional universes. Adding these levels of creativity attracts people like me
(and probably some of you) to traditional Space subthemes.
But these days all we have on the store shelves are Star Wars sets. In fact
the latest S@H catalogue I got is almost nothing but Star Wars -very little
mention of other themes or subthemes. If we stick to the original sets (and
don't build MOCs), our characters will most likely be Star Wars characters
living in the Star Wars universe and maybe even <gasp> experiencing only
replays of the Star Wars stories. Sure, we could buy SW sets and just use the
pieces to build MOCs, but somehow it is not the same. And as for
mixing up SW mini-fig parts to create new characters, such actually provides
better parts for Castle characters (which brings us back to the debate going on
in the current thread about the Space Rocks picture)...
One thing I will add, though, is that the same problem holds for all the
"Classic" themes right now. Except for the Legends from LD, the current Castle
theme is also a restrictive licensed deal (Harry Potter), and the current Town
theme is non-existant as far as I know.
Anyhoo, you can count me in as another post of someone who is going into a
"dim-age" for .space. This is due as much to my own rhythmic swing between
themes from year to year as it is my lack of devotion to Star Wars sets. Don't
worry though, sooner or later something will spark a space idea, and I will
swing back with enthusiasm... Meanwhile, play well! :)

| (...) And voila! So enters the spark: (URL) suppose I am ahead of schedule on my Castle project enough to dabble in creativity with Ice Planet for a bit... Darn you Space people for not letting me totally leave for Castle!! <big smile> -Hendo (23 years ago, 12-May-02, to lugnet.space)
