Actually, for some explanation of how the numbers from the parts are
used to make the part codes, see
<http://www.ldraw.org/library/tracker/ref/numberfaq/>.  That FAQ was
written for LDraw part authors, but amongst the other questions, it
addresses the coding issue.

I know others know much, much more on this subject than me, however; Lots of parts have had minor changes over the years. Take a look at any given piece from years ago and now and you should notice a few things. I just grabbed an inverted 2x2 slope (...) (23 years ago, 24-Feb-02, to lugnet.space)
