Hey ya'll

This answer should hopefully help me decide weather the bot is made with 2 or 4
drive motors.  currently i have 2 motors, but the deign i'm using could easily
be adapted to fit 4 if there is any advantage to doing so.

thanks for any help you can give me.

Travis,

I've had a reasonable amount of success building sumo robots, and I always try
to use 2 motors per port.  (some rules don't allow that)

It's my understanding that the motors draw ~250 milliamp when stalled (that's
when they draw the most current) and the RCX is current-limited to ~500
milliamp.  So, putting more than 2 motors per port will not help you.

This type of configuration will just fit into a 2 lb robot, which is a very nice
weight limit for a LEGO sumo robot contest.

And my BIGGEST piece of advice for your sumo robot: make SURE it does not leave
the sumo area on it's own.  This may sound silly, but it ALWAYS happens to
someone.  Make sure it's not you.

Steve

BTW, if you hook up a couple motors to your RCX, and it blows up, don't blame
me.

Calculations suggest that for a 4 lb sumobot with reasonable tires would "benefit" from six motors, three on each side (differential (...) (21 years ago, 25-Nov-03, to lugnet.robotics.rcx)
