Bah,

And I thought mine was small.  Compared to yours, mine is a
big hulking behemoth. :)  (I know Wes in real life so I can only hope
that maybe he was somewhat inspired by my design. ;) )  My linkage
is completely different and not nearly as clever (although I _thought_
it was pretty clever), but it does fit within the turn tables like
yours.

Yes indeed Paul, your model did provide some inspiration.  For others reading
this group...  Paul introduced me to technics about 4 years ago when he showed
me a pair of Star Wars AT-AT style legs he had designed.  Its good for the
creative juices to have other enthusiasts around to bounce ideas off of.  That
is what makes lugnet so valuable - it increases the enthusiastic community
beyond my geographic location.

Anyway, in mirroring the left/right steering linkage it looks
like you may have the same problems I found in my design.  It looks
as if from your pictures that one of the wheel assemblies is slightly
out of synch with the others.  My question, does this show up as
error when driving the 'bot.  This synch problem combined with the
fact that my design wouldn't allow me to balance my wheel assemblies
with two wheels thereby causing a weight distribution problem, caused
my 'bot to slowly veer to the right or left (depending).  This sort
of nullified the reasons for using the synchro platform in the first
place so I abandoned my platform for a while.

Yes, the slight sync problem of the wheels causes a slow drift in one
direction.  I didn't realize you had the same problem.  I've grappled with this
problem over and over, and I can't get around it.  A symmetrical placement of
the turntables will eliminate the problem.  You say later in this message that
you're going to adapt the linkage to a four turn-table design - I'm working on
the same thing with the hopes it will develop into an all-purpose platform for
various projects.

Also, is there a particular design reason for using the
pulley's for the drive train?  It seems like a slip in one side or
the other could also cause the 'bot to become out of "synch".

No reason other than simple connection.  A prior design had longer axles that
allowed a 24-tooth gear to be placed outside the pulleys and a chain to link the
two drive trains together, but I've found that the wheels slip before the
pulleys, so the linkage wasn't needed.

This is definitely inspiring.  I think I'll play with this
a little tonight.  I'm going to try and adapte this to my four
turn-table design.

        Good job Wes,

Thanks Paul, I consider it a compliment that people are duplicating this design
- so far I have heard from four people (on & off the newsgroup) who are
duplicating this design.  There is another design flaw - the axle that has a
crown gear on one end and 14-tooth bevel on the other must have these gears
squeezed snug - otherwise the steering slips.  I'm working on this one also.
