Basically what you really need is a variation on a limited differential, in
Legos. Such a contraption could be useful in many projects, be they wheeled
or legged. Ideally, you would want it so as whatever steering mechanism is
turned the relative speed ratios of the two elements change (but without the
"slip" that car differentials have). Has anyone done it, or does anyone
know how to do it? (this would take some serious thinking, probably)
We ought to organize a toolkit site (or section for that in the existing
site), where you can in an organized fashion find instructions on ways to
build each of the types of mechanisms like this that apply to many projects
(as well as saying what hasn't been done yet, to give people ideas). Thus a
section for robotic claws, a section for differentials, a section on how to
build a stair climbing mechanism, etc. The current site is a bit of a mess
(I could build a cleaner multipage version, if anybody wants me to).

| (...) A non-Lego(TM) "Constructopedia" has been discussed before for just that purpose. The most promising work seems to be the Kego Constructopedia. See (URL) project seems to be in the hands of university students. In the mean time, I propose (...) (25 years ago, 1-Nov-99, to lugnet.robotics)
