Well, this might not be very feasible, but how about a joint in the middle that
bends left or right? Hence, the body is normally straight, and then bends to
the left or right when turning?

In terms of plausibility with Lego, you'd have to use a large Technic
turntable, or more in series... The other downside is that if all 4 (I'm
assuming 4) legs are geared to walk together, this makes it somewhat more
difficult to make the gearing still work... would be more suggestive of making
the forward and rear legs work independantly... but there are always other ways
to do it...

Anyway, a thought...
