thin copper foil to the brick plastic.  The foil (used in
stained-glass work) has an adhesive side.  I put two

connector. [...] I am NOT getting good adhesion of the foil,
although it has been OK for a few on-off cycles so far.[...]
I tried removing / attacking the plastic a bit with 'GoofOff'

I think xylene or xylol (sold under the brand name Goof Off (tm) ) would
dissolve the ABS plastic. It dissolves every other type of plastic I've tried.

which is close to the universal solvent (You can't HAVE a
universal solvent: what would you KEEP it in??)

There are much better reasons why you can't have universal solvents. See
http://www.lugnet.com/off-topic/geek/?n=497 if you really want to know more (-:

This didn't
seem to help adhesion much.  I'm thinking of Contact Cement, which
should grab the existing foil adhesive well.

Gee, I would have tried epoxy, first thing. I haven't had to glue LEGO(r) to
metal yet, but when I do I'll just go straight to epoxy. Of course you'll want
to remove the adhesive from the copper foil first -- use the xylene for that,
it'll work great and won't dissolve the copper :-) I suppose it would also help
to roughen both surfaces with fine-grit sandpaper.

Also I'd suggest shaving off a little ABS plastic (with a really sharp
knife-edge held at a right angle, almost like you were trying to remove paint)
before adding the foil, in order to preserve the overall thickness dimension.
Even though they might appear to fit fine, that extra thickness is actually
part of the reason the foil doesn't stick as well. There's much more friction
when connecting/removing another brick, and that helps pull the foil off.

I'd like this to work, as it seems a pretty good HomeBrew method
of making connectors.  With the foil along two edges, it acts
just like the Lego connector: Works all 4 directions: one polarity
North+East, other polarity South+West.

OK, I have a pretty good working solution. I used "contact cement": The SOLVENT kind, not the Water Based kind. I did two experiments in attaching .002 inch thick copper foil to the Lego bricks. The copper foil has a self- adhesive coating to start (...) (25 years ago, 17-Sep-99, to lugnet.robotics)

Thanks, Jonathan && Others... I'll look at the patent. With all the 'clones' out there, is it likely that Lego would complain if someone made compatible-but-not- identical connectors?? How do they handle the Clone Market?? Couple of questions, (...) (25 years ago, 14-Sep-99, to lugnet.robotics, lugnet.robotics.rcx, lugnet.robotics.rcx.legos)
