This assumes that all pieces have the same value. As an absurd example,
if you just count pieces you are counting the value of an RCX the same as
1x1 plate. In addition to that, you have marginal value to consider --
if I gave you 1000 1x1 plates that would not be nearly as useful to you
as 1000 assorted parts, unless you really needed that many plates.
When I was collecting parts, I decided on what I wanted and looked at
various ways to obtain them. I wound up with a mix of sets, S@H service
packs, and Dacta service packs. Each of them have certain things that are
cheaper. For example, #779966 Large Gear Wheels gets you 12x24t and 4x40t
gears for $6.75. S@H's #5229 Gears and Differentials gives you an assortment
of gears and one differential for $4.50. Also, until recently the only way
to get a rotation sensor was from Dacta. If you want lots of small items
such as 8t gears, friction pegs, etc, you simply can't beat Dactas packs of
100pc for $10.
Bottom line, don't just make a simple-minded comparison. Decide on what
you want and then look at the various ways to obtain the parts and see
which one is cheapest. That includes considerations for the educational
environment.
