I have half a mind to build a LEGO-compatible 9V battery holder just to try
some tiny vehicle designs. Without an RCX you can't make it do much, but it
would still be really fun to build small Technic models powered by a 9V battery
and a micromotor. With four small wheels, some gears and a polarity switch the
whole thing could still fit in a volume about 10 x 6 x 4 SLU's, which isn't
even as big as the RCX!

If you're worried about current you can always use one of those (expensive)
zinc air batteries:

(Mallory-Duracell has one too but I can't find info about it on the Web)

What is the weight difference between 6 double A batteries and a single nine
volt battery. Noticeable I am sure.

True, but a single 9V battery won't last very long (hours at most) driving
that kind of load, and will probably get quite warm in the process.  They're
designed for lighter work.  The same's true of a set of 6 AAAs.  Either one
would probably be OK for occasional light work with the RCX, but certainly
not for driving vehicles and such for any length of time.
