It would be good to figure out exactly what the burnout mechanism was. does
any other external power source work?
I use a 4Ahr 12V rechargable gel-cel as used in many security panels, its
no-load voltage is about 13V and I have used it for a LONG time now developing
pbFORTH. I really doubt that 13V killed the RCX. I'd bet on the connector to the
external battery pack.
When using an external battery, ALWAYS put an inline fuse in the circuit to
reduce the chance of fire. Batteries are inherently dangerous. I guess putting
a series diode to drop the voltage another .7 V to 12.3 couldn't hurt
either...
