There are two corrections I have to make to this.
The first is, probably pretty obvious but, the room has to be rather dark for
it to work. Otherwise, the RCX won't see your light blinking because the room
light will drown it out.
The other correction has to do with the two example waveforms. Instead of this:

The corrected version has two short pulses per cycle. The sweeping beam will
actually sweep past the RCX twice, once while moving clockwise and again while
moving counterclockwise. This makes the analysis task harder but the concepts
are the same. It will probably be useful to adjust the design of the beacon so
that the signal is easier to analyze. For example, if the blinking light is
always on during the clockwise sweep and off during the counterclockwise part
of the sweep, you don't have to worry about the edges crossing each other.
