Hi all-

Need some help troubleshooting this: I'm trying nqc on the Mac, and so
the first thing I did was try the test program that came with it, but
I'm getting weird errors.

I should preface this by saying that my current setup of cables, IR
tower and RCX works fine under the Mindstorms software using VirtualPC
and the excellent hack from Dave Hylands: http://www.enteract.com/~dbaum/lego/macmind/patch_dh.html

I should further preface this by saying that the Dacta Robolab software
on the Mac is also not communicating well with my tower and RCX. The
green light on the tower comes on, but the RCX doesn't respond in any
way. I've tried changing the batteries, resetting the RCX, using
different cables, and changing from printer to modem port and back
again. The tower is set to "near" because I know Robolab (and I think
nqc, too?) doesn't support "far" mode. But it always gives me a "Wrong
Tower Response" error message. Anyway, I have an e-mail in to Dacta
about that, though I would appreciate anything anyone knows about
Robolab for the Mac.

Using nqc, I try:

nqc -d test.nqc

and I get green light on the tower, the little cone and marching hash
dots on the RCX display (for a while) and then this:

Downloading Program:error
No reply from RCX

If I then immediately enter a second time:

nqc -d test.nqc

I then get more marching dots, a musical scale from the RCX, and this:

Downloading Program:..complete
Battery Level = 8.6 V

At this point it sounds like the program is downloaded. So I hit "run"
on the RCX. But the little person doesn't start moving. The motor turns,
however, and the touch sensor doesn't do anything to stop it. Pressing
the "run" button again doesn't stop it, either. Only turning off the RCX
stops it. As I understand it, this test program should run a motor on A,
and turn off when a touch sensor on 1 goes active.

But the above scenario always happens. Always fails on the first
download try, succeeds (seeminly) on the second, and then doesn't run
the program properly for some reason. I'm able to repeat this every
time. I'm stumped. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance,

-kevin

(...) Very strange. I've heard of some problems with *long* programs failing to load, but never with something as short as test.nqc. Try the following command and e-mail me the results (dbaum@enteract.com) nqc -d -l -v test.nqc (this will print a (...) (25 years ago, 20-Jun-99, to lugnet.robotics)

Don't feel unwelcome.... Mac/Mindstorms users are a minority. The Wintel crowd will take an occasional pot-shot, but what does it matter? In fact, I interpreted Michael's comment to be a joking comment rather than an "attack". More along the lines (...) (25 years ago, 17-Jun-99, to lugnet.robotics)
