I raised this issue in June when discussing GBC reliability, seeing that
1 bps implies a measured time interval. Of course, what is the
interval?, I asked.
The general consensus is that it is a 30 second time interval. As such,
the worst you could do would be to dump 30 balls in bolus upon your
helpless buddies downstream. Of course, this would overload most
modules I have build and most I have seen. (Of course, that poses its
own threat, since turn-about is then fair play.)
I suppose we could all get pedantic and put not just a mean (1 bps) but
also a variance on the rate. Being a stat geek, I'd love to see that,
just so we could say it in describing the standard: "... ten by ten
hopper, ten bricks high. And the module must be able to process at
least 1 bps with a variance of no more than 9 (bps)^2 ..." (Goodness,
now I am wondering how to even measure variance here. We might have to
go to stochastic processes and such. Yikes. I'm not even sure what the
units would be on the variance. Dang. I'm gonna have to look that one up.)
But we're geeky enough, I think: notice how the only babes hanging out
at the GBC were related to participants, unlike the sculpture dudes, who
were literally swatting them away like flies!
Oh, on another topic: I want to make a technic thingy at ratchets when
you gently press the button. Suppose a ball falls onto a little 2x2
tile: its weight tilts the lever down while releasing the ball. Of
course, it would ratchet back up so that the next one would do it too.
So, it could count.
Now, I have other things in mind other than counting but what I need
works in the same manner. Thoughts anyone?

| (...) LOL!! That may be an idea for next year. To come up with a mindstorms concept/competition that appeals to the other gender as well...maybe Bunnie or our significant others can come up with it! Dave (19 years ago, 7-Sep-06, to lugnet.robotics)
