The 8880 - Super Car set has three differentials. It also has 6 "U" joints and 4
large, crude
but very functional CV joints.
Other parts of interest include the parts for a 4 wheel drive, 4 wheel steering
system
with independent suspension. (A arms, tie rods, *8* shocks) It also includes the
parts
for a four speed forward transmission.
I bought an unopened 8880 on E-bay for $270 including shipping. There's a guy in
France selling them for $200 + $30 for shipping.
They're expensive unless you *really* want one. As my main focus for LEGO
robotics
is 4x4 cars, this kit was a must have. The car as delivered is almost built.
Soon after
I'm going to motorize it and begin the redesign to use one or two RCXs to
control
all operations, speed, headlights, transmission, direction.
If you're only looking for differentials, they are sold along with a couple of
gears and
two "U" joints as a service pack in the S@H catalog.

| (...) Motorize the 8880? That'll prolly be difficult - I just tried simply sticking a motor on the main drive shaft, and it just won't drive... maybe with _large_ gear train. But it'll never go fast with a lego motor, I think. My next try will (...) (26 years ago, 12-Jan-99, to lugnet.robotics)
