The others already explained what it does with the LEGO firmware,
so I thought I just add how it works and what it can do with
leJOS or legos.
The remote sends a single kind of command called RemoteCommand
that contains 16 bits, one for each button.
The LEGO firmware reacts to that with the indicated functions,
but if you use something else you can do whatever you want.
For example, you could detect multiple buttons pressed simultaneously
to use buttons as escape meta alt control shift etc if you like :-).
It's described like all the other IR commands in the
LASM Byte codes.pdf document in the RCX SDK.

| I have a couple of questions about the remote control that comes with the Ultimate Accessory Kit. I am assuming it is the same one that can be purchased on its own (#9738). At (URL) there is a jpeg image of the remote control that indicates there (...) (23 years ago, 20-May-02, to lugnet.robotics)
