You can write sophisticated programs for the RCX in the Tcl language
(pronounced "tickle") with the Tcl RCX Bytecode Compiler. Check it out
at
http://www.autobahn.org/~peterp/rcx/
While I am not sure of what you mean by "BASIC-like", Tcl is an
interpreted language with very clean syntax. My web page includes an
example program that may give you an idea of how Tcl programming for the
RCX can work, although it is a simple example indeed (Lately, I am
pretty heavily involved in physical construction for a difficult task -
a robot appendage that can open and close my refrigerator door). A
definite advantage to using an interpreted language is the ability to
work interactively with fragments of program code, getting immediate
feedback as they are executed.
Feel free to email me with any questions/comments/problems you may have,
and enjoy the wide world beyond BASIC!

| I just discovered that my reliable VB 3.0 won't allow me to program the spirit.ocx. What other BASIC-like programming alternatives are out there? I want to write some reasonably sophisticated programs, but I'm afraid I don't know C... Thanks! -- (...) (26 years ago, 22-Dec-98, to lugnet.robotics)
