Hello Mathias,

my idea is to add a 9.6v (8 cells nicd) rc-accu to a
robot which should act indepentently for a longer time.
i thought about leaving normal alcaline batteries in the
rcx and wire the accu in parallel with them.
because of the higher voltage of the accu, it would
"run out" faster than the normal batteries, which them-
selves would still grant a basic voltage to avoid memory
loss.
...
- is it possible to run the rcx on 9.6v without damage?
- are my "physical thoughts" correct or would the normal
batteries be consumed as well in operation?
- would it be possible to recharge the accu while connected
to the rcx and the normal batteries in it?

I am not sure whether the alkaline batteries will like the external voltage
applied to them. If not, your RCX is in immediate danger, because they may
explode or leak. Trying to charge the accumulators with the alkaline
batteries in place will worsen the issue.

If you want a safe solution for using backup alkaline batteries, you will
have to make sure

- Current cannot flow into, but only out of the alkaline cells.

The usual way to effect this would be a diode. If you don't know
what I am talking about, this idea probably is not suitable for
  you.

- The RCX shuts down before it starts draining the backup battery.

Given the voltage figures from the other reply post, this would
mean a 4 cell battery (which gives you 6,0 V nominal), as opposed
to the usual 6 cells. However, I am not sure whether the RCX will
really hold its memory with just 6V. Also, while the batteries are
still new they will give you more than 6,3 V (probably something
like 6,6V), so the RCX will not shut down when the accumulators
are empty, but instead drain your alkalines.

Hope this helps

Greetings

Horst

I just moved from 6 1.2 volt rechargables to a 9.6 volt metal hydride pack that I bought at radio shack. Despite the aweful appearance I am pretty happy. I decided not to cut on the RCX box and just built a cage to hold it to the bottom of the RCX (...) (23 years ago, 1-Dec-01, to lugnet.robotics)

(...) Would LEGO let you do that? Probably not. I've had no trouble running the RCX off a 12v DC supply from a transformer, with the batteries in. The RCX has great power supply circuitry. - Jacob (23 years ago, 2-Dec-01, to lugnet.robotics)

hi list! did anyone ever tried to attach an accu pack to the rcx - in addition to the batteries inside the rcx? my idea is to add a 9.6v (8 cells nicd) rc-accu to a robot which should act indepentently for a longer time. i thought about leaving (...) (23 years ago, 30-Nov-01, to lugnet.robotics)
