Re: Distance sensor for RCX based on Sharp GP2D12

(...) What about a larger capacitor that could sustain multiple readings between charges ? Or a small rechargeable battery that was trickle charging when the sensor wasn't being read ? -Simon (23 years ago, 20-Apr-01, to lugnet.robotics)

(...) Can be done, but charging time will be proportionnally longer. Could be useful for burst reads. (...) Mmmm... at that point an external battery pack would be much simpler and not that big ! Philo (URL) page : (URL) (23 years ago, 23-Apr-01, to lugnet.robotics)

Re: Distance sensor for RCX based on Sharp GP2D12

Philippe, Nice work. I ordered a few parts and am going to try it out. Now if I could figure out how to multiplex 4 sensors to a single input an be able to monitor them individually. The goal is crossing sensors on the front and rear to give true (...) (23 years ago, 23-Apr-01, to lugnet.robotics)

Re: Distance sensor for RCX based on Sharp GP2D12

Hi Steven, no problem ! The circuit shown on our website (depending on the work of Michael Gasperi) is easy extendable with a fourth (and more) sharp GP2D12. Have a look at : (URL) you need is to build a fourth little amplifier-ciruit (the fourth (...) (23 years ago, 23-Apr-01, to lugnet.robotics)

Re: Distance sensor for RCX based on Sharp GP2D12

A microcontroller based solution such as Andreas one ((URL) perhaps be more suitable for your application. A thing that would be helpful for this kind of heavy configuration would be an "IO-processor" consisting of a microcontroller linked to RCX (...) (23 years ago, 23-Apr-01, to lugnet.robotics)

Re: Distance sensor for RCX based on Sharp GP2D12

Rainer, Do I need another 4066? Can't I just use the fourth one in the current 4066? (...) (23 years ago, 23-Apr-01, to lugnet.robotics)

Re: Distance sensor for RCX based on Sharp GP2D12

Hi Steven, you need another 4066. The fourth bilateral switch is connected to ground. This provides (using the 2.2kOhm resistor) a reference value for the RCX. This values mark your start point. This makes it possible to know "where" you are with (...) (23 years ago, 23-Apr-01, to lugnet.robotics)

Re: Distance sensor for RCX based on Sharp GP2D12

Steven Nickle (to Rainer Balzerowski) asked: (...) Instead of a 4017 switching a 4066, why not use a 4518 controlling a 4051 analog multiplexer? That would keep the IC count the same, but allow you to manage 7 GP2D12's using the original strategy (...) (23 years ago, 1-May-01, to lugnet.robotics)

Re: Distance sensor for RCX based on Sharp GP2D12

Hi Steve, sounds good to me ! Try it and let us know, if it does work (why shouldn't it ?!?). Sad, but I don't own 15 (not even 7) Sharps. :( But, if changing the supply voltage (using a switch to chose between 5V from regulator (for sharps) or (...) (23 years ago, 2-May-01, to lugnet.robotics)
