Strange.  My attempts still fail with extension cables, but still work with
2.2 meter Lego cable only.  Failed twice at total 4.2m when trying to add 2m
extension cables.

Test #1 4.2m failed:  Unplugged one end of a proven serial cable from an APC
UPS while leaving the other end connected to the PC.  Plugged the 2.2m Lego
cable into the open end.  Plugged the other end of the Lego cable into the
IR tower.  Attempted communication but failed.

Test #2 4.2m failed:  Used another 2m extension cable to replace the 1st
cable from PC to 2.2m Lego cable.  Attempted communication but failed.

Test #3 2.2m passed:  Removed extension cable.  Plugged 2.2m Lego cable into
the PC.  Attempted communication and succeeded.

All tests conducted with ScoutTool to Scout and RoboLab to RCX2.

Thanks for the info that it should work.  No big deal, except for the
mystery.  The other cables work to the UPS solo.  Do you think that the
extra connection deteriorates the signals?

(...) There must be something terribly wrong if you couldn't get it to go over a couple of meters. RS-232's maximum cable length depends on the baud rate - at 9600, it's good for about 500 meters IIRC. The tower comms is about 1200? 2400? You (...) (24 years ago, 15-Feb-01, to lugnet.robotics)
