There must be something terribly wrong if you couldn't get it to go
over a couple of meters.
RS-232's maximum cable length depends on the baud rate - at 9600, it's
good for about 500 meters IIRC. The tower comms is about 1200? 2400?
You *should* be able to use a cable up to a kilometer in length...something
like that.
