        Firmware file version? —Greg Betzel
Is there a way to get the version # out of an RCX firmware file? Namely, the files firm0309.lgo or firm0328.lgo. I'd hate to rely only on the file's name. It'd be nice if one could reliably get the version, without having to download the file into (...) (24 years ago, 26-Nov-00, to lugnet.robotics)

Re: Firmware file version? —Kekoa Proudfoot
(...) The first line of each file should be unique, and you should be able to use it to infer the version number. At least the first line is unique for firm0309.lgo and firm0325.lgo. You can actually decode the lines if you like -- they are header (...) (24 years ago, 26-Nov-00, to lugnet.robotics)

(...) Somebody sent me a copy of firm0328.lgo and indeed it has a unique header string -- "firmdl0328.lgo", as expected. -Kekoa (24 years ago, 27-Nov-00, to lugnet.robotics)

Re: Firmware file version? —Greg Betzel
Just wondering, what set is firm0325.lgo from? Thanks, Greg Betzel (24 years ago, 27-Nov-00, to lugnet.robotics)

Re: Firmware file version? —Kekoa Proudfoot
(...) It is not from a set if I remember correctly. I think I downloaded it from Lego's Mindstorms web page once upon a time. The readme says it is from "RCX2 SDK PRE ALPHA, PATCH 3." The date given is April 17, 2000. -Kekoa (24 years ago, 27-Nov-00, to lugnet.robotics)

Re: Firmware file version? —Tilman Sporkert
I don't know what version 0325 is, but as far as I know, only two versions of the firmware have shipped with Lego sets so far. Both the 1.0 and 1.5 RIS sets, plus all add-on sets (RoboSports, Extreme Creatures, Mars) ship with the original firmware. (...) (24 years ago, 27-Nov-00, to lugnet.robotics)

Re: Firmware file version? —Greg Betzel
Hello again, Does anyone know what the checksum is for downloading firm0328.lgo (the checksum to pass to the RCX begin-download call)? I've been doing some experimenting with firmware downloading. While my code comes up with 0xc278 with firm0309.lgo (...) (24 years ago, 16-Dec-00, to lugnet.robotics)

RE: Firmware file version? —Ralph Hempel
(...) Way back when, I think I remember Dave Baum posting a note to the effect that the firmware checksum calculation stops around 0xCC00, which is where the firmware variables live. The old firmware was smaller than this, but the new firmware image (...) (24 years ago, 16-Dec-00, to lugnet.robotics)

Can the cybermaster tower talk to the Scout —Niels Holme
Quick question: Can I use the control tower from the cybermaster (8482) to program the Scout? Thanks Christian (24 years ago, 16-Dec-00, to lugnet.robotics)

I don't know what Dave Baum may or may not have said, but here is the ROM's algorithm for computing the checksum: short offset = 0 byte validstr = 0 short sum = 0 for (addr = 8000; addr < cc00; addr++) sum += byte at addr if (byte at addr == (...)          Re: Firmware file version? —Kekoa Proudfoot
Regarding the firmware checksumming, firmdl3 did not do that correctly, nor did it support any of the latest firmware files (0325, 0328), complaining because they were too large. I made the necessary changes to fix these problems. You can grab the (...) (24 years ago, 16-Dec-00, to lugnet.robotics)

RE: Firmware file version? —Greg Betzel
(...) The new firmware is a lot larger. The last address in the old fw file is 0xBFFO, and in the new file it's 0xE160. More than a little past 0xCC0. :) I wonder what Lego does to make the download work.... Greg Betzel (24 years ago, 16-Dec-00, to lugnet.robotics)
