BrickBots.Com contest number two is starting a day early due to the upcoming
U.S. holiday.  The goal of the second contest is to sort a shuffled deck of
playing cards into a black and a red pile as quickly as possbile.  For
complete details visit http://brickbots.com/currentview.asp?cid=10.  Sorry,
no prize for this one except the admiration of your peers.

Our first contest to stack empty aluminum cans as high as possible is still
awaiting entries.  I have been working on a robot to do this, and I suspect
a few others are.  The main things I have learned so far:  a stack of empty
aluminum cans is not as stable as I imagined, and the motion of Lego gears
against one another is not as smooth as I had hoped.  Has anyone tried to
get very smooth motion out of a rack and pinion type system?  I have been
experimenting with various size 'pinion' gears, but with even mild
resistance from the rack, the motion is pretty jerky.

I remember seeing some designs for a burt toast mill somewhere, but do not
have the URL.  I imagine that the designer of the mill probably faced a few
of the issues I have with my can stacker.  Does anyone know the website I am
thinking of?

  Firmware file version?

Is there a way to get the version # out of an RCX firmware file? Namely, the files firm0309.lgo or firm0328.lgo. I'd hate to rely only on the file's name. It'd be nice if one could reliably get the version, without having to download the file into (...) (24 years ago, 26-Nov-00, to lugnet.robotics)
