Re: Why java is (not) bad for Mindstorms

(...) And the very best way to use MindScript with LEGO programmable bricks is with Bricx Command Center. It provides context sensitive help, syntax highlighting, code insight, code completion, and a host of other incredibly useful features which (...) (20 years ago, 24-Jan-06, to lugnet.robotics)

Re: Why java is (not) bad for Mindstorms

(...) I'm almost certain, but not quite, that the original RIS 1.0 GUI did not save programs in textual form (MindScript). I believe that functionality was introduced in a later release. When you say "the LabView environment does the same thing" I (...) (20 years ago, 24-Jan-06, to lugnet.robotics)

  Robot new video

Hi, I' m just like you and can' t wait for Mindstorms NXT.... :) but don' t forget all the great things we have build with "old" mindstorms.... I' ve just put online new videos of my (old) robot on brickshelf: (URL) Ho2 is my second humanoid: 1 (...) (20 years ago, 24-Jan-06, to lugnet.technic, lugnet.robotics, FTX)

Re: Why java is (not) bad for Mindstorms

(...) I believe there are JIT for J2ME environments which can be as low as 128KB of RAM. I'm not disagreeing with you, I'm just stating that the JIT technology is applicable to embedded systems and the argument of "its too complex" doesn't always (...)   Re: Why java is (not) bad for Mindstorms

(...) I think this would be a nice project and prove very useful. (...) I'm not really advocating Java or any language. Personally, I think Java is in appropriate for low-level programming and one is probably best off with C/asm. However, in this (...) (20 years ago, 24-Jan-06, to lugnet.robotics)

Re: Should I lubricate my Lego motor?

(...) Is this triggered by time or by usage? (i.e. will a motor that is run more wear out faster?) (20 years ago, 24-Jan-06, to lugnet.robotics.rcx.legos)

Re: Should I lubricate my Lego motor?

(...) You may want to check if your motors are the new type 9V geared motor (#43362). If so, please be aware it is prone to failure, the first sign being sticking. Pl see my previous post on this ailment: (URL) amount of lubrication is going to (...) (20 years ago, 24-Jan-06, to lugnet.robotics.rcx.legos)

Test - trying to get rid of annoying legal signature

Sorry for that test. I am just trying to get rid of my company signature by using a web based post service :) (20 years ago, 24-Jan-06, to lugnet.robotics)

RE: Why java is (not) bad for Mindstorms

(...) You should try very high level math... So yes every effort should be made to ease learning but definitel, as others said, one language won't fit everyone needs, because those needs can really be way too different.   RE: Why java is (not) bad for Mindstorms

(...) Wrong :) For two reasons: - a JIT is quite complex if you want to really gain something and requires too much memory (remember the NXT only has 64 KB of RAM); - JIT and real-time are not good friends... On top of that, a carefully implemented (...) (20 years ago, 24-Jan-06, to lugnet.robotics)

NXT + BlueTooth + PC (was: Java Baad)

Ditto to pretty much everything on this thread. My present robot has a PC running Linux talking to an RCX over IR, using my own (not XML!!) message protocol. For a look at how this can play out, check out what these guys did with some NSA money: (...) (20 years ago, 24-Jan-06, to lugnet.robotics)

Should I lubricate my Lego motor?

My robot is having a hard time getting around and I think that it's because the motors seem to be sticking. Even on my linoleum floor, my little tank robot often gets stuck and goes in slow circles, because one motor gets stuck. Once I nudge it or (...)   Re: Why java is (not) bad for Mindstorms

(...) It does. The RIS GUI saves the programs in *.lsc files (in the "Vault"). These programs appear to be a C language variant. The LabView environment does the same thing. TFP (20 years ago, 24-Jan-06, to lugnet.robotics)
