A few relativly simple ideas concerning picture piracy.
A) Why not make lcad bricks that are not removable so that models could
contain permanent initials of the author.  this could also be done by making
dat files so that they are read only.  this would definately be something for
Karim Nassar and anyone else on the artemis project to look into
B) As for the field of photography making sure that images remain virgin
becomes a much harder prospect.  one solution would possibly be to create
watermarks and register theseunder a central source.  these digital watermarks
would have to be small enough that they would only be noticeable by someone
who would be informed of their location.  So we're talking a size of maybe 5x5
pixels.  how well these would remain hidden would be entirely up to the
image's author.  agood way to go about this might be to put a dk. gray
watermark into a black area of the picture (you can decide on any alike colors
which you would find suitable).

Just a thought please feel free to offer any feed back to me in this matter

Steve,
I believe some people are looking into it.  This involves a pilgrimage to
Enfield Connecticut.  But I'll let them discuss it when they return.

An update of sorts:
I was the one who made the pilgrimage, and the other parties who would have
come unfortunately weren't able to make it.  Their legal dept (I met with the
intellectual property lawyer) is very aware and very concerned with this
issue.  As BradJ said last Sunday, they're working on revamping lego.com.
They're looking to impliment safeguards to prevent this sort of thing in the
future.  They're looking for ideas and suggestions on how to prove that a
model is original, though, so if you do have ideas, send em to
legodirect@lego.com.

If you read some of my recent comments in dear-lego, I've talked about the
rest of the visit as it pertains to LD.  I've talked about the model shop
visit in .cad where we're discussing progress in LCAD stuff (I was able to
inquire about their CAD system).  I'll be posting many pictures later on, when
I get to my dorm and have the fast connection.  Then I'll give a brief on the
tour and visit in general :)

Sorry if this sounds harsh--it isn't meant to be. (...) One of the great thing about the DAT file format is that it's plain text. How can you make part of a text file unremovable? Secondly, lego.com never deals with DAT files, so this would solve no (...) (24 years ago, 5-Sep-00, to lugnet.publish)
