respectfully, my reference books say that the term sloop is very ambiguous.
originally, it had meant a single masted vessel, but that definition changhed
over time. the definition of a sloop of war is a vessel captained by an
officer with the rank of commander. sloops could either be rigged as ships (3
masts), or brigs(2 masts). large sloops were similar to 6th rates in layout,
with 3 masts, a quarterdeck and forecastle. sloops of war carried 10-18 guns.
there is considerable overlap of the brig classification and sloop
classification. brigs carried 2 masts only, and usually only mounted
carronades, rather than long guns, while sloops were larger, caried rated
guns, and were rigged with either 2 or 3 masts. there was even a class called
brigsloops, small, brig rigged sloops, sometimes carrying guns, sometimes
carronades.
this is all taken from my reference book. it goes into much greater detail in
explaining all the types of sloops, but i cant type that much :-)

Nonono, a sloop has ONE mast (At least since the 17th century; before that, it
could be up to 3). Any ship with more than that cannot actually BE a sloop.
Sloop of War is defined as a ship with cannons on one deck only. Both my own
reference books (The Story of Sail is an excellent resource) and Websters
Dictionary confirm this, along with other sources. Check out the webpage I
posted earlier (
http://users.pandora.be/tree/wrecksite/db/other/types_of_sailing_ships.html?en
); it does an excellent job of correctly detailing the various sail-plan names.

Ships were usually classified by sail plan. If you add a jib sail to a sloop, it
becomes a cutter. If you add a mast, it becomes a brig (both masts
square-rigged), a brigantine (A two-masted vessel with the foremast fully square
rigged and her mainmast rigged with both a fore-and-aft mainsail (usually a gaff
sail) and square topsails (and possibly topgallant sails)-**This describes your
ship**), or a schooner (all masts fore-and-aft rigged). Note that the term sloop
also implies fore-and-aft rigging.
Therefore the Tempest *is* a Sloop of War but is not an actual Sloop.

| (...) As a vessel description, yes, but it should be refered to as "Her Majesty's Sloop Tempest" (Or HM Sloop Tempest). Just like you'd refer to a Royal Navy Brig as "HM Brig ...". But of course, there were no reigning British Queens between 1714 (...) (21 years ago, 16-May-04, to lugnet.pirates, FTX)
