Check the previous post for rules, but the mini-challenge is to build a drag
racing robot that will detect the end of the course, and return to the starting
line. We'll also talk about the up-coming Robot display for Easter weekend -
members can participate by building a GBC module, or an Easter Egg finding
robot. Also at the meeting we'll discuss this year's Grand Challenge.

One week left to build your most amazing drag racing robots! I've had a couple
of questions about the arena and event which I'll answer here.

First of all, the arena will be made out of separate boards that are painted
white. This means that your robot will have to deal with a bit of a gap or a bit
of unevenness where the boards meet. It shouldn't be too bad, as they will be
taped together by the line, but it probably means that you shouldn't have any
bricks dragging on the ground. If your robot has a ground clearance of a quarter
inch or so, it should be fine.

Secondly, the robots will start in the white space behind a starting line. This
means that your robot will have to dead-reckon an inch or two before starting to
track the line. You can, of course, line up your robot however you like, but it
must be completely behind the line to start with.

The course will look something like this:

Here's |
Your   |--------------------------------------------------
Robot  |

The vertical line (might not line up if you're looking at it with a proportional
font, but imagine that it does) is the start/finish line. The long horizontal
line is the line you have to track. It just ends. There's nothing else to
indicate that the robot is at the end of the course. The robot starts completely
behind the starting line.

Finally, I've had a couple or requests for something wider than 3/4" tape. 1"
wide black masking tape exists, but I think we'll stick with the 3/4" tape,
since that's not really much of a difference. On the other hand, if I get a half
dozen more requests for wider tape, there's nothing sacred about the 3/4" stuff.

The object of any mini-challenge is to see if you can build a robot that
accomplishes the task. The fact that this one is competitive can be ignored if
you don't want to have the pressure of trying to compete. I'd much rather see a
lot of interesting attempts, than only two or three really fast robots. As
usual, this is a very informal event.

Besides the mini-challenge, we have a number of other things to discuss at the
meeting. There's this year's Grand Challenge, the Robotic Easter Egg Hunt, and
Ball Contraption, as well as other business that might come up. So hope to see
everyone at 2pm at Digipen. The meeting will end by 5pm, and afterwards we often
meet at the Red Robin down the street. See you next week!
