Hello Everyone,

I did some pricing on barriers this weekend.

Post and rope barrier rental: $12 a day or $24 a week per post.
                             $3 a day or $6 a week per 8' rope. (clip on
                                  type)

I found some posts for sale at about $75 each, ouch!

From what I have gathered so far, the post and rope idea is very expensive
unless we make our own posts.

(Crossposted to .org.us.nelug for archive purposes)

Here is a quick suggestion that NELUG has considered for making our own posts
that is actually relatively cheap.  (Note: we have not done this yet because
many of us, myself included, like the open format we currently have and as long
as Tom continues to not mind his train hitting the floor once or twice a show
{1} we will probably keep it that way)

Basically the idea goes like this:

For the posts you use 1 LEGO bucket (many of us have more of these than we know
what to do with), a 2.5 to 3 foot lenght of PVC pipe, a "T" joint for one end
of PVC pipe, and some Quick Drying Cement.

In theory you would take the bucket and cut a hole in the lid to size with the
PVC pipe.  Then you would fill the bucket 2/3'rds with the cement, Center the
PVC pipe and put the lid on keeping the pipe plum.  Finally attach the "T"
joint to the top of the PVC pipe parallel to one side of the bucket.

For the rope you could use rope, plastic chain, metal chain, etc. as long as
you can thread it through the "T" at the top of the PVC pipe.

Pretty simple and pretty cheap if you find you really need/want barriers.

{1} Many of these have been of Tom's own doing.  I think only once has a
spectator caused a crash and that was an adult swinging a loose jacket across
the rails accidentally.

I believe that you are forgetting the time the kid put his head on the track and the train hit him in the face!!! How could that one have possibly been my fault? (...) (24 years ago, 21-May-01, to lugnet.org.us.michlug, lugnet.org.us.nelug)
