Hello Everyone,

I did some pricing on barriers this weekend.

Post and rope barrier rental: $12 a day or $24 a week per post.
$3 a day or $6 a week per 8' rope. (clip on type)

I found some posts for sale at about $75 each, ouch!

From what I have gathered so far, the post and rope idea is very expensive
unless we make our own posts.

Looks like it. 12 a day per post is a lot!!! for a 32x20 area with posts
every 8 feet around the perimiter that is 16 or so posts... boatloads of money.

I have an idea for making plexi-glass barriers that would clamp on to the
tables.

Is plexi available cheaply?

Maybe the reason people go barrier free is not because it's their first
choice in an ideal world but because the other approaches are too expensive.

Not to butt in on y'alls conversation, but I can give a bit of insight into
the barrier situation that we had with the NGLTC layout.

For the first few shows we used home made barriers, these were made from the
old style LEGO buckets. I took a piece of PVC pipe and put in the top of the
bucket and filled them with concrete. Then ran some yellow rope though holes
in the tops of the pipe. These really worked well after we got smart and ran
two ropes at different heights.

Slowly we started converting to plexi-glass for two reasons. One, the bucket
barriers took up a lot of space in the van, space that I'd rather use to
carry more LEGO. Also the barriers took up valuable floor space at the show.
If we were given an area of 30'x20' we knew that a perimeter of about 2' was
used up by the ropes. With the plexi-glass we were able to put the table
right up to the limit and they took up much less space in the van.

Also smaller visitors were able to get closer to the layout to get a good
look with out fear of little hands getting run over. Another plus was that
the glass kept the trains from hitting the floor when one would jump the
track for whatever reason.
