Yes, I've been there, and based the 30" size recommendations on the
dimensions you have for 32x32 stud baseplates. rtlToronto uses 30" and
commented that baseplates fit "just fine." We'll have to convince ourselves
either way, methinks.

Yeah, the proof's in the pudding, so to speak. We should actually measure a
baseplate, or better yet, I'll take some to OfficeDepot and place them on
the units directly. I've measured them at 10"x10" in the past, and two
other clubs I'm aware of use 30" tops for train layouts. It's one thing to
talk about this stuff, and another to physically test it out, of course.
PNLTC discusses table dimensions in their website prose as being 3' wide,
and hold 9 32x32 baseplates. That says 30" by 30" to me, but I definitely
see your point - the plans indicate and extra .25" both in width and length.
Curious. I've squinted at a bunch of their show pics trying to find
evidence that the .25" isn't used, and it's hard to pick out. Look at
http://www.pnltc.org/Gal_LLCA_0801/Europa/Gallery.html?08030032 and you can
see a gap at the right edge - is that the extra .25"? Perhaps the rest of
the module isn't filled to the brim with baseplate, but we'll just have to
see. The trouble is that they use matching LEGO primary colors on the table
surface, so it's hard to get a contrast. This pic shows a great scene, but
it's too close to call on the edges:

My guess is that the .25" is used to absorb the space that's created when
you actually join 9 32x32 baseplates together on a single surface. The
plates will be about 1/32" apart once they have a brick or plate spanning
them to join the whole mess together. If you lay 9 baseplates edge-to-edge
it may be 30", but in practice, gaps are evoked. That adds up across three
baseplates, and there you have it. I guess I'll have to actually measure an
OfficeDepot table to see if they include an extra .25" to help out poor
souls like us :^)
What am I saying...I'm talking myself out of the strict 30" argument! Argh.
...the quest remains!

| (...) ...a few seconds of digging reveals Ben Fleskes' comments relevant to this matter, and proves that Alan's probably right: (URL) a PNLTC 30" x 60" module is actually (30.24" x 60.47" or 96 x 192 studs), we just call it a 30x60.
